Larry Ellison’s (Oracle) Rising Sun (Biggest Yacht in the World)

Added in Yacht on the August 28th, 2006

Larry Ellison’s (Oracle) Rising Sun (Biggest Yacht in the World)

Rising Sun is the result of the intense competetion between luxury mega yachts. Built by Lurssen yachts, this is the biggest yacht in the world. She was built to surpass the size of Octopus (owned by Microsoft’s Paul Allen), which was then the biggest yacht in the world.

Built by the same company, Rising Sun looks a little bit different from her counterparts Octopus, Carinthia VII and Pelorus; she has a majestic yet sophisticated look - the exterior was designed by Jon Bannenberg.

Rising Sun is 138 meters long.

Mirabella V, the Largest Single Masted Yacht / Tallest Mast in the World

Added in Yacht on the August 24th, 2006

Mirabella V, the Largest Single Masted Yacht / Tallest Mast in the World

Mirabella V is a single masted, super luxury sailing yacht. It has the tallest mast in any yacht in the world, the craft itself is huge compared to a big racing yacht. It currently holds the Guinness World Records of the tallest mast and the largest sail.

The yacht is owner by Joe Vittoria, and it is available for charter for upto US$ 275,000 per week. The design was the result of the brainstorming by the designers to combine the luxury of motor yachts and the speed and agility of sailing yachts, in one big yacht. The designers then came up with the single mast solution as it would reduce the hassle at the same time giving extreme and flexible sailing power. To reduce weight the designers chose to use composite boat building materials.

Mirabella Vs mast reaches up to 292 feet (88.5 meters) from water level. When the keel is fully dropped, the draught is 32 feet. The sail is the largest in the world and the size covers 1,833 m2 / 19,730 sp ft. She is 246 feet (75 meters) long (LOA) and 48 feet (14.8 meters) wide (beam) and has a displacement of 740 tonnes when fully loaded.

Luxury Yacht Carinthia VII

Luxury Yacht Carinthia VII

This is Carinthia VII, one of the finest yachts in the world. She was designed by Tim Heywood, for Lurssen yachts. Carinthia VII is 97.2 meters long, 15.95 meters wide and does 26 knots on 4 of 9925 BHP engines. The most remarkable thing about this mega yacht is the neat design.

The design must not be confused with that of previous Carinthia named yachts. Carinthia VII has much similarities to other Tim Heywood designs, all big named mega yachts such as Air, Octopus and even Pelorus. Instead of competing for size, Carinthia VII comes with extreme looks and fancy onboard features to go with that.

Carinthia VII is reportedly owned by German billionaire Heidi Horten.

Pelorus, by Lurssen Yachts

Pelorus, by Lurssen Yachts

Pelorus is probably THE MOST spectacular yacht ever built. It is monstrous, with 115 meters overall length, 17 meters beam and running 5 meters deep. It has the most sophisticated exterior look, that gives its cutting edge characteristics. This mega yacht is built by Lurssen yachts and it was designed by non other than Tim Heywood, who is also the designer for the beautiful Carinthia VII and Octopus.

Pelorus is owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovichh. The yacht contains five star dining, sports centers, diving center, submarines, personal watercrafts, theatre, pool, and everything else you would imagine on a state-of-the-art luxury yacht. The distinct look of Pelorus is its battleship like lines and hull design which is in consistency with the golden ratio. This ratio does work on yacht designs, it is obvious.

Octopus, Microsofts Paul Allens Yacht

Added in Yacht on the August 8th, 2006

Octopus

Octopus is owned by Microsofts Paul Allen. Currently this is the second biggest yacht, next to Oracles Larry Allisons Rising Sun. Octopus gets its distinct yet familiar characteristics that goes along with other mega yachts in the club designed from her manufacturer Lurssen yachts. Octopus belongs in the same fleet as Carinthia VII, Pelorus, Air and Le Grand Bleu, however she was not designed by Tim Heywood as the rest in the fleet. Octopus was built by Lurssen Werft and styled by Espen Oeino Design.

Octopus is 126 meters (414 feet) in overall length, 21 meters (19.2 feet) in beam. She costs over US$ 200 million, and onboard she carries 2 helicopters, a submarine, cinema, recording studio, jacuzzi, watersports center, personal watercraft bay and all the luxuries and amenties one would imagine on one of the most expensive yachts in the world.

La Grand Bleu

Added in Yacht on the August 4th, 2006

Le Grand Bleu

Le Grand Bleu is a megayacht in its own class. No other yacht has so many features while they keep on racing for the size and Le Grand Bleu is the only proud yacht that carries a sailing yacht, a 36 feet speed boat, submarines, personal watercrafts, mini and missile defence systems, helicopter, sewerage and waste recycling systems, water purification with all the luxuries and amenties found on the most expensive yachts in the world. This yacht is more focused on getting it all out in the sea, Le Grand Bleus offer is totally limitless. This yacht is 371 feet long and is powered by two 3,600 hp Wrtsil engines. Le Grand Bleu was built at the Vulkan yard in Germany and was launched in 2000. Le Grand Bleu was first owned by a Saudi businessman, who sold it to Roman Abramovic (who also owns Pelorus). In 2006 Abramovic gave away this yacht to his friend Eugene Shvidler.

The Biggest Sailing Yacht, Maltese Falcon

Added in Yacht on the August 4th, 2006

Maltese Falcon

The Maltese Falcon is a sophisticated clipper luxury yacht, owned by Tom Perkins, and with its 289 feet length, it is currently the largest sailing yacht in the world. The distinctive, truely unique appearance and the innovative concept sails gives the Maltese Falcon its rightful place in extremely creative yacht designs.

Currently registered in George Town, USA, it is planned to be registered in Valletta, Malta as Grand Harbour. The huge sail area consists 5 sails on each of its 3 masts, and each sail is about fifteen square feet in area. The sails take only 6 minutes to open on its carbon fibre rotating masts, and the complete mechanical and electronic setup gives the Maltese Falcon its edge as a clipper ship that does not need many crews as a regular clipper ship requires. The Maltese Falcon is built on the DynaRig experimental concept and the designer has now called it a great success.

Apart from the powerful sail setup, it has onboard two 1800 hp Duetz engines and it gives a 20 knot cruise speed. The engines themselves are remarkable, as they are totally quiet and gives almost no vibration unlike the typical noisy marine diesel engines.

The interior was designed by Ken Freivokh and supplied by Sinnex.
